Adsterra Smartlink: How It Works and How to Set It Up

Adsterra Smartlink: How It Works and How to Set It Up

An Adsterra Smartlink is a single URL that sends your visitors to one of Adsterra’s ad offers when they click it. You can use it on a website, in an app, or on a landing page for social traffic, and you do not need a full website to start. In this guide I explain how it works, how to create one and where to place it safely.

I run Adsterra on my own sites and teach it to my students, so I keep this practical. Every fact about the product below comes from Adsterra’s own help center and publisher blog, which I read before writing.

What Is an Adsterra Smartlink?

Adsterra’s help center describes the Smartlink as a URL where your traffic is sent after users click. Adsterra’s algorithms then pick a landing page from the advertisers’ campaigns running on the network.

Adsterra’s blog adds that a Direct Link is the same thing as a Smartlink, and that it has no visual format. It is only a URL, so you attach it to text, a button or an image yourself.

This is different from banners or the Social Bar, which are scripts that draw something on the page. You can compare all formats in my guide to Adsterra ad formats.

How an Adsterra Smartlink earns money

Adsterra explains the flow in four simple steps. A visitor lands on your page, clicks the link, is redirected to a relevant offer, and you are paid for ad views (CPM) or for a target action (CPA).

According to Adsterra, about half of the campaigns run on CPM pricing and half on CPA pricing. This means both impressions and conversions can affect your eCPM.

Please do not read this as a promise of income. Adsterra itself says that CPM and payouts depend on several factors, and some case studies on its blog show very high numbers that are not typical for a beginner.

Adsterra Smartlink Without a Website

Adsterra’s help center says that if you have a social media group, a YouTube channel or a mobile app, you can use the Smartlink to monetize your audience. This is why many beginners start here.

But there is a catch. Adsterra’s blog warns that you cannot simply put a third-party link in your Instagram bio or TikTok profile, because it may result in a ban. Its white-hat advice is to send followers to an intermediary page of your own and place the link there.

Always read the rules of the platform first. If a platform does not allow monetized links, do not use it, whatever any tutorial says.

How to Create an Adsterra Smartlink Step by Step

The steps below follow Adsterra’s help center for the no-website method. The names in the dashboard can change slightly over time, so use them as a guide.

  1. Sign up or log in. If you do not have an account yet, follow my Adsterra publisher account guide first.
  2. Open the Smartlinks tab in the publisher dashboard and click Add Smartlink.
  3. Choose the category. Pick Mainstream for normal traffic. Adsterra also lets you enable adult ads to raise CPM, but I do not use this on a general education site.
  4. Click Add and wait for approval. Adsterra says this usually takes a few minutes and that it will update you by email.
  5. Copy the link from the Smartlinks page once the status shows Active.

If you want the link for a specific website instead, Adsterra’s blog says you add the site under the Websites tab, choose Direct Link as the ad unit and wait for approval. That review takes 2 to 10 minutes according to the same page.

Adsterra also sends an email with every ad code you request, so check your inbox if you cannot find the link in the dashboard. If you no longer want to see a Smartlink’s numbers, the Smartlinks page has a Turn Statistics Off option.

Where to Place Your Adsterra Smartlink

Adsterra’s help center lists several placements: call-to-action buttons, text with a call to action, full-size image previews, return buttons, images and GIFs, and subscription buttons. On a website you just use a normal link tag.

Safe placement ideas

  • A clearly labeled button next to a free download or bonus content.
  • A text link inside a post where it makes sense for the reader.
  • An image preview that opens a larger view.
  • Your 404 page template, which Adsterra’s blog suggests as a spot.

Placement to avoid

Adsterra warns against adding the link to core navigation buttons or close to them, because you will get accidental clicks. It says this signals false actions and the CPM can drop. It also tells publishers not to mislead users, so never disguise the link as something it is not.

In WordPress, Adsterra’s blog suggests opening the link in a new tab and adding the nofollow attribute for advertising links. I do the same on my sites.

Smartlink vs Other Adsterra Formats

A Smartlink is not always the best choice. This table shows how I think about it for a beginner blog.

Situation Better fit Why
Social group or channel with no site Smartlink Adsterra says it works without a website
Blog readers who dislike pop-ups Social Bar or banners Adsterra suggests less invasive formats for ad-sensitive audiences
Niche sites such as religion or parenting Native ads Adsterra says Smartlink is not the best fit for narrow topics
Extra income on an existing site Smartlink with another format Adsterra says formats can be combined

Do not put every format on one page. Adsterra itself calls ad overload a notorious monetization mistake that scares visitors away.

What Affects Adsterra Smartlink Earnings

Adsterra’s blog lists four main factors: traffic quality, GEO and device type, traffic volume and your niche. Time on page, bounce rate and pages per session are examples of quality signals.

It also states that traffic from bot farms or any artificial method will give zero CPM. That matches the rule I teach: only real visitors, never fake clicks. If you need honest ways to grow visits, read my guide on how to get traffic for Adsterra.

On GEO and devices, Adsterra says that mobile traffic has pushed ahead in recent years and that Tier-1 countries such as the US, UK and Australia are in high demand. It also notes that other countries can pay well, so test your own audience instead of copying someone else’s numbers.

In my own tests I check the Smartlink’s statistics page after a few days and compare it with my analytics. This helps me see which page or button actually brings clicks.

Common Mistakes With an Adsterra Smartlink

  • Buying cheap traffic. Fake or bot visits give no value and can get your account in trouble.
  • Posting the raw link everywhere. Social platforms can treat it as spam, so use your own intermediary page.
  • Hiding the link behind a misleading button. Visitors should know what they are clicking.
  • Ignoring inactivity. Adsterra’s help center says a Smartlink that is unused for more than 14 days becomes inactive. You can reactivate it with Resubmit on the Smartlinks page.
  • Expecting instant results. Revenue follows real visitors, and building them takes weeks, not hours.
